In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
